Every Day Color Theory - Color Stories of Beauty & Meaning - Entry One - Purple and Green

If there is one thing I've learned about color over the course of my adult life, it is just how powerful it can be. I'll share a little story with you.

When I was nineteen, I had just reconnected with my dear aunt, grandmother, and cousins after ten years of being apart due to my parents' divorce. They were a lifeline of love, faith, Beauty, and compassion.

A few weeks before my birthday, I had been shopping with my sweet cousin, whom I had always looked up to as a little girl. I pointed out a sleek pair of Nike tennis shoes that were purple and green. Boy, did I love those shoes, which were completely outside my budget.

A few weeks later, when I opened my gift from the three of them, to my utter surprise and delight were those tennis shoes. In that moment, I felt so loved, seen, and most of all accepted. All from purple and green tennis shoes. God is good all of the time.

Now, over thirty years later, that color combination still moves me. It's also where my deep love of color, meaning, and emotional connections to time and place through color began.

I now understand that color is more than a random result of the sense of seeing. It is feeling, emotion, a sacred noticing. My love of color and light is one of the biggest reasons I became an artist.
